In Your Share (Aug 20th edition)

I’ve been wearing my favorite t-shirt all summer, but since last week’s heat wave ripened everything I’m going to have to quit talking about it and actually DO some canning!!

This week your share may include…

• Arugula: This makes for a tasty quick summer salad.
• Basil: Most of the bunches this week will be traditional green Genovese basil – pesto anyone?
• Carrots: More sweet summer carrots!
• Cucumbers: The green slicer is Diva and she lives up to her name! There may also be a few Lemon cukes in the mix too.
• Sweet Corn: Many farmers are incredulous when I tell them we transplant sweet corn, but it works! Some of the new sweet corns seem almost too sweet to me, but this variety, Sugar Buns, is super tender and has a great balance of sweet + old fashioned corn flavor.
• Lettuce: These Batavian Crisp lettuce varieties are my favorite’s during the summer. Even in the heat they stay sweet & crunchy.
• Spring Onions: The Red Tropea onion an elongated red heirloom Italian with a sweet mild flavor. Use the bulb as you would a regular onion and think of the green tops as giant scallions. I love this post at Calabria from Scratch about these famous onions!
• New Potatoes: We had a bumber crop of golden Nicola! This potato variety is said to have a healthier glycemic index and high levels of phenolic acids.  It makes great home fries, and it’s good for you – what could be better!
• Radish: These add great crunch & color to summer salads
• Summer Squash: All different kinds this week – different colors of patty pan, zucchini & crookneck.
• Tomatoes: Our first tomatoes of the season are always Stupice, a small slicer from the former Czechoslovakia. Over the years we have trialed many early tomatoes and Stupice wins the taste test every time!
