In Your Share (Sept. 7th edition)

This week your share may include…

  • Basil: Something a little different this week – thai and purple basil. We should have more genovese green basil next week.
  • Beets: A mix of red, heirloom Chioggia and golden beets.
  • Cabbage: Time for summer slaw.
  • Cucumbers: The green ones are mostly Diva – a tasty , productive and thin skinned variety. Also in the mix are several small yellow heirloom varieties including Lemon and Boothby’s Blonde.
  • Greens: Big beautiful bunches of mizuna, mustards and arugula
  • Lettuce Heads: Summer salad greens are back!
  • Onion:  This Italian heirloom, Cipolla Rossa di Tropea, is a red onion from Calabria near the city of Tropea. It has a distinctive elongated shape, is very juicy and has a terrific sweet flavor.
  • Green Peppers: A mix of bell peppers – which are short, squat, sweet and juicy with a thick wall and some Anaheim peppers – which are longer, have a thinner wall and just a touch of heat.
  • Jalapeno Peppers: The first hot peppers of the season!
  • Summer Squash: Great on the grill – slice patty pan varieties through the scalloped edge and smaller zucchini lengthwise, brush with a bit of olive oil, salt & pepper, and enjoy!
  • Tomatoes: Stupice and the beginning of the Heirloom varieties this week.
