The Town That Food Saved

Thanks Sharon for sending me the link to this thoughtful article about Ben Hewitt’s new book ‘The Town That Food Saved” in the LA Times this morning. Especially liked his for rules for better food system…

It must be economically viable to small-scale producers. It must be based on sunshine, i.e., not dependent on chemicals and petroleum. It must feed the locals as well as meet demand from other places. And it must be circular, meaning, for example, that the compost used to create healthy soil would come from the food eaten by people and animals in that community.

It got me thinking about all the great things that are happening here in Portland but also how far we have to go truly align with the rules. For example – I’m headed down to Grand Island this morning (burning fossil fuel to get there) to do some disking with the (sunshine based) horses!
